TECH: New XRAY T2 008

Jirka Toman

XRAY T2’008

Forward-thinking R/C car development… that is a very good way to describe XRAY ever since it
came into the R/C car scene in 2000. With a long and distinguished
history of racing achievements and ground-breaking, award-winning
innovations, XRAY has… does… and will continue to offer the most
advanced RC touring car <!– separe –> on the market.

Based
on the coveted and ultra-successful T2 and T2’007 platforms,
the new XRAY T2’008 is a top-quality “no-compromise”
engineering marvel that was designed for a sole purpose… to put you
in the winners circle.

“Revolution”
“Evolution” “Optimization.” Key terms that
describe how the T2’008 was realized. XRAY’s R&D and the
factory driving teams have spent a great deal of time analyzing,
testing and creating, all in the effort to bring you the very best
optimized platforms for your racing needs. From the optimized
suspension… through the optimized drivetrain… to the optimized
chassis and top decks… every small detail has been optimized for
particular racing conditions. Many of the features that made the
T2’007 so successful have been carried over to the T2’008 with
numerous details changed to make it even better than its
predecessors.

With
the changing landscape of R/C touring car racing, the T2’008 has been
optimized to outperform in all different racing conditions, whether
it be on asphalt or carpet, using rubber or foam tires, 5- or 6-cell
or LiPo battery packs running the highest-performance brushed or
brushless power plants. Look no further than XRAY… there is a
T2’008 version that is optimized for each combination… all
inclusive… all that’s needed is the desire to win.

Pure design. Pure racing. Pure adrenaline.

Optimized
Drivetrain

The
ultra-efficient XRAY drivetrain has been improved again by optimizing
the drivetrain concept for particular foam and rubber chassis
versions, so as to obtain maximum efficiency for the particular
conditions. Both of these racing conditions are completely different,
XRAY is the first company to optimize the drivetrain for particular
racing classes.

For
rubber tire racing, where rubber tires have larger diameter, the
pulley diameters have been increased to 38T diff pulleys along with
smaller 16T center layshaft pulleys. The most frequently used diff
combinations have been incorporated into the car design, so now the
front axle features the all new ultra-lightweight XRAY Composite
Solid Axle and new rear adjustable lightweight composite ball
differential.

For
foam tire racing where foam tires have smaller diameters, the pulley
diameters used maximize the efficiency of the drivetrain: 34T front &
rear diff pulleys along with larger 20T center layshaft pulleys.
Again, the most frequently used diff combinations have been
incorporated and the car features new front and rear adjustable
lightweight composite ball differentials.

Optimized
Drive Shaft Lengths

Not
only have the drive train been optimized, but also the transfer of
power to the wheels – through the drive shafts – Both
have been optimized for both rubber and foam racing conditions.

For
rubber tire racing, new longer 52mm drive shafts are used to allow
the drive shafts to be positioned more towards the cars centerline in
the out drive of the diff/solid axle. This generates more overall
traction and makes the car easier to drive on low-traction tracks.

For
foam tire racing, standard 50mm drive shafts are used as the foam
tires have generally higher traction than rubber tires and as such
the shorter drive shafts have optimum transfer of torque to the
wheels.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Lightweight Composite Solid Axle

When it comes to the high performance cutting edge there is no compromise
at XRAY. Rotating mass has one of the most significant influences on
the performance of the racing cars, and as such XRAY constantly keeps
developing both designs and materials to bring new & improved
products to provide better performance and handling. With the
highest-performance DNA in its blood, XRAY proudly presents the
all-new unique lightweight composite XRAY Solid Axle. The Solid Axle
has a very stiff structure and ultra-light weight that was achieved
by injecting the entire solid axle from XRAY’s own
self-designed & mixed lightweight composite material.

The
outdrives are fully exchangeable which allows very easy and
comfortable servicing, while the unique drive shaft connection —
now eliminating the former drive shaft blades — enables direct
power transfer to the axle and eliminates play between the drive
shaft and outdrives, improving steering precision and increasing
overall steering.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm“>The
XRAY Solid Axle is included only in the EU Edition, but is available
as an option for the US Edition.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; page-break-before: always“>
Lightweight Composite
XRAY Ball Differential

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm“>The
new composite XRAY Ball Differential is not only lighter but it also
provides smoother diff action. The composite lightweight differential
incorporates separate diff outdrives which are easily removable for
super-easy servicing, and the construction of the drive shaft
connection of the drive shaft to the diff outdrives — without
the use of drive shaft blades — enables direct power transfer
to the diff and eliminates play between the drive shafts and
outdrives. XRAY’s innovative yet very smart Labyrinth Dust
Cover™ diff protection system has been carried over from the
previous T1/T2 platforms where it has been very successfully used for
many years. The special internal labyrinth design of the diff covers
prevents and dirt, debris, and carpet fibers from getting into the
differential and as such reduces servicing and ensures longest life
of the differential.

The
new adjustable, composite XRAY Ball Differential features carbide
balls and a high-quality carbide thrustbearing for ultra-smooth
running.

The
US Edition features both front & rear ball differentials with 34T
pulleys. The EU Edition features a rear ball differential with
38T pulley.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Blade-free Drivetrain Concept

The
new Solid Axle and Ball Differential were designed with both
performance and customer satisfaction in mind. The interchangeable
and replaceable outdrives on both the Solid Axle and Ball
Differential do not have traditional slots and cut-out for drive
shaft insertion with protective drive shaft blades… but rather
the outdrives feature inner slots for direct fit of the drive shaft
pin. This design enables the drive shafts to be used without drive
shaft blades, minimizing operating costs. Moreover the direct, snug
fit of the drive shaft pins has no play and vibration during the
operation of the drive shafts.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Ultra-lightweight Aluminum Bulkheads

All
new ultra-lightweight bulkheads have been completely redesigned and
are a work of engineering art, where luxury meets simplicity and
practicality. The bulkheads are CNC-machined from premium Swiss 7075
T6 aluminum and were strategically machined to provide the lightest
possible skeleton support framework for the car, and thanks to the
ultra-low platform it was possible to create the lowest, smallest,
and lightest bulkheads ever.

The
rear bulkheads feature a split design, allowing the rear suspension
to be mounted to separate bulkheads while the center layshaft sits on
its own, even narrower bulkheads which are even positioned even
closer to the center of the chassis. XRAY’s attention to
detail is noticeable with all the precisely chamfered edges. The
split design of the bulkheads also enables extra-easy access to front
and rear differentials and middle layshaft. Changing the diffs and
spur gear is quick and easy.

3 Different Chassis

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm“>There
are 3 different chassis available for the T2’008, each
specially designed and optimized for the particular type of racing
conditions where the car will be used. The EU Edition which was
designed for rubber tire racing features a 2.5mm thick chassis
CNC-machined from premium grade graphite material, and itself is also
available in two different versions: 5-cell or 6-cell. The US Edition
was designed for 6-cell foam tire racing, and features an ultra-thick
3.5mm CNC-machined chassis of premium-grade graphite material.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

US Edition Milled Chassis

The
extra-thick, extra-stiff chassis features milled pockets. This allows
the bulkheads and all other parts to be mounted very low, in fact
they are at the level as the standard 2.5mm chassis. The extra
thickness of the chassis enables the car to achieve an ultra-stiff
torsion and flex setting required for high-competition foam tire
racing. XRAY knows that even the smallest detail has an impact on the
handling and performance of the car. So, every chassis is
CNC-machined in-house by XRAY using the most modern German milling
machine which is fully robotically operated and controlled to ensure
that every chassis meets the tightest manufacturing tolerances.

US
Edition Top Deck

The
new US Edition top deck is purposefully wider in the front, allowing
the top deck to be connected to the chassis with aluminum stands,
creating a solid platform for high-traction foam tire racing. The
rear separate top deck mount features the same extra-wide design
allowing the rear top deck mount to be connected to the chassis via
aluminum stands.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

EU
Edition Top Deck

The
new EU Edition top deck was specially redesigned and optimized for
rubber tire racing conditions. The very narrow design provides
sufficient torsion and flex while the top deck has been prolonged to
provide elongated flex, thus reducing unwanted tweak in crashes. The
very low bulkheads allow prolonging the top deck up to the central
layshaft, and prolonging it over the motor mounting area.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Top
Deck Mount

New
center aluminum top deck mount was specially designed for rubber-tire
carpet racing which permits decreased front suspension traction and
eliminates front tires from overheating, ensuring consistent handling
throughout an entire run. The aluminum center top deck mount can be
easily mounted or removed depending on the particular racing
conditions.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Front
Bulkhead Reinforcement Legs

The
new front bulkheads were specially designed to allow adjustment of
front chassis flex for different racing conditions. The lower part of
the front bulkheads features reinforcement legs which can be easily
mounted to the chassis (via 2 extra screws) which influences the
front flex of the chassis; removing the screws from the reinforcement
legs gives additional chassis flex.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Diff Height Adjustment

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm“>Both
front and rear bulkheads feature diff height adjustment independently
front and rear. By rotating the diff eccentric holders, the height of
the diff can be adjusted by 1mm. Optional eccentric holders with 2mm
offset (#302069) are available which will additionally allow the diff
height adjustment by 2mm.

Motor Lower Mounting Position

The
aluminum motor mount bulkhead mounts the motor even lower, thus
placing the CG even lower than before. The chassis area below the
motor has been additionally milled out to allow the motor to sit as
low as possible.

More Forward Traction

The
position of the rear differential has been moved more towards the
rear of the chassis to provide more forward traction. With the new
position of the differential, a new and longer rear drive belt was
incorporated.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm“>The
2-belt 4WD drivetrain concept provides maximum efficiency and highest
performance using Kevlar®-reinforced drive belts for
ultra-high durability. Narrow (3mm) front and rear drive belts have
been specially ground for minimum thickness and flexibility. The
front drive belt has been carried over from the previous T2 platform,
while a new longer rear drive belt has been included to accommodate
the new rear diff position.

Centrally-positioned
Layshaft

The
middle layshaft was strategically positioned towards the center of
the chassis on separate, super-narrow middle layshaft bulkheads
positioned along the chassis centerline. The middle drive pulleys are
positioned along side of the main spur gear and as such the
drivetrain energy is transmitted from the motor through the centrally
positioned spur gear to both middle layshaft pulleys… ensuring
maximum balance of the car.

<P STYLE=“margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.04cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm“>

Alu Middle Layshaft

The
new aluminum layshaft has been strategically CNC-machined to minimize
rotating weight without compromising strength or integrity. The
hollow layshaft is perfectly round with zero runout, eliminating
drivetrain vibration and producing a positive balance. Composite
pulleys key solidly to the layshaft. The new middle layshaft
composite holders have a new updated shape to fit into the new
bulkheads. The front and rear upper top decks capture the holders in
levered areas.

Proven
Suspension Geometry

From
the narrow arms, through the tiny front and rear suspension blocks,
to the smaller more robust steering blocks, every suspension part has
been specially designed and optimized to provide responsive racing
characteristics in all racing conditions. Over the years XRAY has
successfully gained and utilized extensive suspension geometry
knowledge and self-developed suspension stiffness technology, which
have been utilized when designing the T2 suspension parts. The
ultra-lightweight suspension parts are molded from a special
composite material that makes the parts very light yet very durable
to withstand the rigors of high-performance racing.

New
C-hubs have larger openings for quicker & easier
assembly/disassembly of the CVDs. The entire CVD assembly can be
easily inserted/removed through the C-hub without the need of
disassembly. The larger openings prevent collision of CVD with C-hub
in serious crashes.

The
new C-hubs are available in all standard caster angles (2°, 4°
and 6°) and are also available in two different hardnesses that
are optimized for particular racing conditions. The EU Edition
includes medium hardness (M) C-hubs specially optimized for rubber
tire racing, while the US Edition includes hard hardness (H) C-hubs
that are well proven to provide a solid and stiff suspension for
foam tire racing.

two different roll center positions on the rear uprights, and more
roll center positions can be easily adjusted by adding shims between
the upright and the turnbuckle ball joint.

Anti-Roll
Bars

When
it comes to optimization, XRAY knows no limits and as such not only
the suspension geometry and hardnesses were optimized for rubber tire
racing, but also due to the fact that anti-roll bars are almost
always used for rubber tire racing, XRAY includes optimum standard
1.2mm front and rear anti-roll bars. The anti-roll bars are mounted
with the included composite holders to the front and rear bulkheads,
and are easily mounted to the integrated anti-roll bar mounts on the
suspension arms.

For
easy recognition the anti-roll bar has two laser-engraved stripes
that represent the 1.2mm thickness symbol for easy and instant
recognition. Optional anti-roll bars are available for super-fine and
precise anti-roll bar adjustment.

self-developed Quick Roll-Centers™ make setup quick & easy.
The front and rear shock towers feature pre-set optimized roll center
positions. Using the eccentric aluminum roll center holders you can
easily choose one of 4 quick roll-center positions on the front shock
tower; the rear shock tower features two new extra positions, making
a total of 6 different quick roll-center positions. Easy, smart,
quick.
